Can I request that the postman leave the parcel on my front porch or that it skip the signature requirement?

No, sorry, it is unsafe to do so. A signature is required to fully ensure that the parcel gets delivered to the recipient and to minimize the risk of loss. Otherwise, compensation for a lost package would not be offered by the postal service.
